A TYPICAL DAY AT COMMANDEURS BAY ACADEMY: Students arrive on the CBA campus between 8:30 and 9:00 am to begin their school day. Once on campus, students can relax on the outdoor patio areas, exercise studio, or in the CBA air conditioned classrooms and log into their online school learning platform to check their daily schedule. They can then choose to watch news, read, or ease into their day. All students will log into their first class by 9:00 am. The CBA blended learning academic day runs from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. This schedule coincides with optimal learning hours for young children and adolescents. CBA seeks to maximize student performance during these specific hours.
Individual choice and flexibility are key components of blended learning and online school programs. Students work on their core subjects at whatever grade level they are at academically, and at whatever pace they wish, to assure both mastery and understanding. Each student, with advice provided by the learning coach, chooses which classes and assignments they will work on each day. All students can take breaks whenever they are desired or needed. Students are encouraged to take healthy snack breaks and enjoy, interact, and relax with each other throughout the day, and especially whenever they choose to have their lunch break in CBA's stress free, positive, safe, nurturing, environment.
Another key component of being a part of CBA is that each and every CBA student also learns, and puts into daily practice, the school's Four Golden Rules: Safety, Common Sense, Common Courtesy, and Respect. These Four Golden Rules are part of the school's student mantra, and are an important part of Commandeur's Bay Academy's directive and mission to foster global citizenship and build an exemplary individual code of conduct.
Students who are enrolled in online programs that have live lessons scheduled at varying times throughout the week will attend those scheduled live interactive lessons with their online teachers and classmates. If students miss a scheduled live lesson, for whatever reason, they may be able to watch a recording of it via their online school resources and links at any time of the day or night. Other students, who do not have live interactive lessons, will continue to work at their own pace and choosing on their daily assignments. They can also choose to work on future lessons and assignments to get ahead if they wish, or take advantage of free time to explore something that interests them.
Throughout the school day, the students are constantly supervised and monitored. During this time the CBA instructor is also performing his role as a learning coach and teacher, working one on one with individual students helping them with their lessons and assignments, offering advice, guidance, constructive criticism, encouragement, and positive feedback. The CBA teacher / learning coach also provides enrichment lessons throughout the week to students, providing more in depth knowledge or building important skills, as well as taking advantage of teachable moments as they occur. The beauty of the blended classroom and online learning, is the flexibility that it allows students and teacher to explore, research, to seek out knowledge and information, and to utilize creativity in problem solving with group dynamics and interaction. These are the real world 21st century skills students are able to practice and internalize on a daily basis. Learning becomes fun and contagious in this environment and students help other students as they share knowledge and skills. In short, they become team players, each with their own strengths to share and contribute to making each other reach their true potential. Global citizenship is promoted, and the desire to become life-long learners is instilled.
Finally, students may end their academic day at the CBA campus at any time with the parents permission. This again displays, the beauty and flexibility of online learning in action. Students must demonstrate that they are responsible and mature learners, by making sure to complete their assignments in a timely and academically satisfactory fashion. They also must make sure to meet the minimum logged-in hours requirement of their online school. The typical CBA academic school formally day ends at 2:00 pm. If parents wish to have students stay after this time, 60 or 90 minute tutoring sessions are available from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. Tutoring Sessions incur additional fees.
